Honouring Indigenous Voices in the Game - National Indigenous Peoples Day with Hockey NWT
June 21st marks National Indigenous Peoples Day, a moment to honour and celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across the Northwest Territories and beyond.
At Hockey NWT, this day is a reminder that sport is more than just competition. It is a space for connection, belonging, and cultural pride. Across the North, Indigenous players, coaches, officials, and families continue to shape the identity of hockey, not only as participants but as leaders and trailblazers in our communities.
Whether it’s a young goalie stepping onto the ice for the first time in Fort McPherson, a seasoned official leading the way in Yellowknife, or a parent organizing equipment drives in a small hamlet, the presence and contributions of Indigenous peoples have strengthened the game we love.
We also recognize that the path to reconciliation is ongoing. We remain committed to:
Supporting inclusive programming that breaks down barriers
Amplifying Indigenous voices and stories within hockey
Building environments where every child feels welcome and proud
As we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day, we invite the hockey community across the territory to reflect, to learn, and to appreciate the deep roots Indigenous peoples have in our game and in our communities.
Together, we skate forward, with respect, with gratitude, and with hope.
Thank you to every Indigenous player, coach, volunteer, elder, and family who keeps the spirit of hockey alive in the North.
