Two teams from the Northwest Territories proudly represented the North this past weekend at the 55+ National Hockey Championships in Calgary, Alberta.
While neither team advanced to the playoff rounds, the results tell only part of the story. Both teams pushed some of the tournament favourites to the limit, coming within just a couple of goals of major upsets and showing clearly that hockey remains strong in the North.
More importantly, the weekend was about something deeper than standings. It was about connection, camaraderie, and the shared love of a game that continues to bring people together across generations. For this group of players, the experience was a reminder that the game still has the power to make them feel like kids again, competing, laughing, and creating lasting memories on and off the ice.
Opportunities like this highlight how fortunate we are to stay active and engaged through sport at every stage of life. The passion for hockey does not fade, it evolves, carrying with it friendships, stories, and a continued sense of belonging.
Looking ahead, both teams are already turning their attention to the next chapter, with excitement building toward the upcoming Canada Games in Regina.
Both teams would like to sincerely thank Hockey North, the NWT 55+ Canada Games Association, and the City of Yellowknife for their continued support and sponsorship, making this experience possible.
