We are thrilled to welcome the Circumpolar World to our region in 2018.

In March 2018, the Arctic Winter Games are returning to the Northwest Territories’ South Slave region for the first time in 40 years. Hosted jointly by the communities of Hay River and Fort Smith, the Games’ 25th Anniversary will be a milestone event and a unique opportunity to connect with a large, highly engaged audience from across the Canadian North and Circumpolar World.

The original intent of the Arctic Winter Games, as instilled by Pierre E. Trudeau, was to provide a venue to allow Northern athletes to compete at comparable levels to their Southern counterparts and to build a strong network between communities.

The South Slave’s regional approach will incorporate the communities of Enterprise, Fort Providence, Fort Resolution, Kat’lodeeche First Nation, Kakisa, and the host communities of Hay River and Fort Smith.

The spirit of the Games will flourish in the South Slave. Sporting competitions will provide athletes with excellent opportunities to perform at their best and the talents of the cultural contingents will be recognized with daily performances. Additionally, there will be celebrations of the many cultures of the region, including Dene, Métis, Cree, Chipewyan, Inuit, Inuvialuit, Quebeçois and Filipino residents who call the South Slave home.

"Ultimately, the Arctic Winter Games were a stepping stone that inspired my Olympic aspirations. After representing Canada at two Winter Olympic Games and racing all over the World, I can say without doubt that some of my most memorable sporting moments have been from past Arctic Winter Games."Brendan Green (Hay River), Two-time Winter Olympic Biathlete.
