CWG ID Camp - First time for female Fort Providence athletes

May. 02, 2022

Fort Providence, May 1, 2022 - After an amazing week of hockey, friendships build, bringing the communities of the North together to try out for the multi sport games in 2023 and possibly being selected to come back to the camp in August, 2022.

This years Canada Winter Games ID camp was the first time that female athletes participated from Fort Providence. There was a total of 7 athletes joining from the hamlet down at the Mackenzie River and two of them being female.

Coach Edward Landry “The girls are getting better, they never played female game before. Due of Covid, we were on lock down for most of the time. Once the kids were back on the ice, just a few weeks after, the ice went out. We don't have enough volunteers, coaches and funding. It's a rebuild, refocus on the future."

Hockey goalie Marina said that it was hard, but that it is was great to be at the camp. She said, "nice to skate with everyone and trying my hardest.”

It was great to see all athletes giving their best, working hard and having fun playing the sport that we all love so much. We are looking forward to more events like this, outreach in the communities and providing more possibilities and opportunities for our youth.
